The Government of Sierra Leone (GOSL) announced the creation of a National Commission on the Environment and Forestry (NaCEF) through Cabinet Conclusion CP 17 (2005) 28, of 20th July, 2005. NaCEF is an Executive and Policy Advisory Institution under the supervision of the Office of the President.

NaCEF as a government institution consists of the Divisions of Environment and Forestry.  It is involved in project implementation, monitoring and priority setting with respect to environmental, forestry and other relevant legislations.  It is the permanent, long-term environmental authority in Sierra Leone, undertaking the day-to-day environmental management and forestry functions and has enhanced enforcement capacity.

Role and Mandate

1. Advisory
  • Ensuring that National Policies on environment and forestry reflect International agreements
  • Review current legislations on environment and forestry and advise on necessary updates
  • Ensure that agencies, partners and companies whose activities have an environmental impact do abide by existing legislation
  • Inputs to new legislation
